Editor's note: If you've ever survived a car wreck thanks to your seat belt, say a little "thank you" to Volvo. Swedish inventor and Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin developed the three-point seatbelt and convinced Volvo to make it standard equipment in 1959. The company then generously released the patent so that other car makers could use it as well, and Volvo would go on to be known for making life-saving luxury cars.
